Understanding Menopause

One of our closest friends sent us a podcast from an article posted about menopause in the NY Times. The article was published on February 1, 2023. We must say, it’s both a great read and an even better listen. It breaks into the fact that most physicians are ill-equipped and misguided with regard to their treatment of menopause or rather, lack thereof. Despite evidence based clinical research showing the contrary, most physicians have been educated that hormone therapy is bad; leads to blood clots, heart disease, hanging their hats on one study (The Women’s Health Initiative) which in all honesty is quite flawed. While the podcast holds some truths, it does make an error by lumping premarin (horse urine estrogen), estrogen (blanket term for all the different forms of estrogen), and estradiol (the most prominent of bio-identical hormones) into the same bucket…not to mention the use of progestins (the pharmaceutical medications that bind to the progesterone receptors. . . and have been shown to have cancer links, clotting issues, and cardiovascular complications). As physicians, we take an oath to “first do no harm”. It is for this reason that we believe physicians shy away from hormone therapy; however, in this scenario physicians are WRONG because bio-identical hormone molecules are NOT the same molecules studied in the Women’s Health Initiative! Until we completed our training, until the research was directly shown to us, we too once believed that hormone replacement therapy was bad! That being said, we NOW know the truth and want to help as many patients as possible!
