Statins and Diabetes Risk in Postmenopausal Women.

This study investigated whether the incidence of new onset diabetes was associated with statin use in postmenopausal reviewed from the Women’s Health Initiative.  They essentially pulled out those women in the WHI that were taking statins and showed a marked increase in the development of diabetes compared with those that did not take statin medications.

This is not the first time we point out that statins are associated with the development of diabetes.  I suppose what we find most striking as we review the literature is that this paper came out in 2012 and yet, statins are still a mainstay treatment.  I suppose this can be secondary to patients being reluctant to dietary changes because we all love our carbohydrates; regardless, it’s worrisome!
