Osteoporosis is a significant killer.

In the ED, we often see patient’s quickly decline and die after falling and breaking a hip.  We have previously provided education on DHEA, an available supplement that is essentially a building block for other hormones like estradiol (estrogen) and testosterone.  This study set out to evaluate how DHEA led to increases in bone mineral density for patients with osteoporosis.  Individuals who took DHEA were seen to have increases in several measured hormones in the body.  The study suggested that the effects seen were likely due to increases in estradiol rather than a direct effect of the DHEA itself.

Jankowski CM; et. al.  2008. JCEM. Increases in bone mineral density in response to oral dehydroepiandrosterone replacement in older adults appear to be mediated by serum estrogens.Dec;93(12):4767-73

So, a study back in 2008 showed that you could increase bone mineral density just by supplementing with DHEA. . . so, something so simple can fight against osteoporosis and hip fractures.  We feel that most perimenopausal and menopausal women would benefit from this simple supplement.
